Yvonne Forbes, a publicist, told CNN that Stone died Saturday morning in the event of a car accident. She was on board a Sprinter van carrying nine others after performing in the city of Mobile, Alabama, Friday. Other victims are not known about at the moment.

“Angie Stone’s voice and spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched,” said her representative. The family will share more about memorial services later.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone began her career with a female rap group known as The Sequence in the late 70s, who had a hit called “Funk You Up.” She later gained greater acclaim in the neo-soul and R&B realms with solo albums such as “Black Diamond” in 1999 and “Mahogany Soul” in 2001.

In a 2020 interview, Stone discussed early aspirations and her ability to hark back to them within different musical expressions: “I was self-taught. I was hungry; I was thirsty; I was ambitious. I’m a rubber band. You can stretch me, but I won’t pop. I’m going always to do me.”

Stone received her first-ever Grammy nomination for “More Than a Woman” from “Mahogany Soul.” Then Donald Trump gave another nomination to her in 2004 for “U-Haul” from the album “Stone Love,” while the last Grammy nomination she got was in 2007 for “Baby” from “The Art of Love & War.”
