John Lithgow is being considered to play Dumbledore in the HBO series “Harry Potter”

Final negotiations are underway for John Lithgow to portray Albus Dumbledore in the next HBO adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” novels.

Even though HBO said, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation,” Variety has confirmed Lithgow’s claim for the role with sources. Only once we close transactions during pre-production will we verify specifics.

Dumbledore is the enigmatic yet devoted headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the “Harry Potter” novels and films. He is a strong, ancient wizard who guides Harry in his conflict with Voldemort, the Dark Lord. In the first two “Harry Potter” films, Richard Harris portrayed Dumbledore; following Harris’ passing, Michael Gambon assumed the part.

Actor Lithgow has been a favourite for many years. He has starred in films including “The World According to Garp,” “Terms of Endearment,” and “Footloose,” as well as television shows like “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Dexter,” and “The Crown.” He most recently starred in Focus Features’ “Conclave” and FX’s “The Old Man.”

Paapa Essiedu, who is rumoured to be a strong candidate to portray potions professor Severus Snape, may join Lithgow in the cast. The three main characters, Harry, Hermione, and Ron, will probably be played by newbies; in the autumn of 2024, Warner Bros. held an open casting call for children ages 9 to 11.

With “a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters ‘Harry Potter’ fans have loved for over twenty-five years,” HBO has characterised their adaptation of the book as “a faithful adaptation.” While the films, which were released between 2001 and 2011, “remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally,” the series is slated to continue across ten years with the goal of exposing the story to new audiences.
